Meeting of May 10, 2010

Secretary Glynis McKenzie served as Chair in the absence of  Chair Howe and Vice Chair Florence Schroeter.
Glynis McKenzie called the meeting of the Fine Arts Commission to order at 7:05 p.m. in Room 12 of the Cultural Center.  

I.  ROLL CALL
PRESENT:   Regina Barall; Glynis McKenzie Judy Okeson; Betty Russell; Dan Russell ;Prescille Yamamoto.
                     
ABSENT:    Terrye Blackstone (excused); Karen Howe (excused); Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien; Maureen Rodgers;  
                     John Ryan; Florence Schroeter (excused); Roberta Sweeney (excused); Sue Tukey.

Glynis McKenzie declared a quorum for the purpose of holding a meeting and to approve payment of bills.
           
II.   MINUTES

III.    CHAIR’S REPORT                                  No report at this time.

IV.     CORRESPONDENCE
Information was received from the following:
  • Riverfront – Big Moe event

  • Thank you from Suzanne Kent for mini-grant award (pictures included)
  • Thank you from Lorraine Kemp for mini-grant award
  • Thank you from Regina Barall, Circle of Life, for the $2000 grant award
                
V.      COMMITTEE REPORTS
Drama/Lecture Poetry                                    No report at this time.                 

Music
Glynis McKenzie reminded the Commission of the Paul Bisaccia/John Thomas concert being held at First Church on Sunday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m.

Photography                                             
Glynis McKenzie reported that the Photography Exhibit is scheduled for June 21- July 2 at the EHCCC. Exhibits should be no larger than 16 x 20 and not framed.  Drop off of photos can be done at the Park and Recreation Department Office from June 14 – June 18.

        Film Series                                             No report at this time.                         
Art                                                             
Dan Russell reported that the Art Festival was held and the Purchase Award was painted by Maria Guasta entitled “Footbridge over the Hockanum River”.  Clinton Deckert was the adjudicator.  Dan reported there were many exhibits with a very diverse selection.

Dan stated that the Purchase Award was matted and framed but the matting was inferior.  Terry Blackstone will go to Hartford Fine Art and Framing to have it re-matted. The plaque, calligraphy and photo will be done also.
        
Regina Barall reported that the Student Art Exhibit held at the EHCCC was a wonderful exhibit with many parents coming to view student art.  The high school, along with CIBA, had many entries.

Children’s Programs
Glynis McKenzie reported on behalf of Chair Howe in reference to Buffa doing a program at Willowbrook in the fall at a parent night.  Date to follow.                                   


        Dance                                                           
Regina Barall reported that the Dance Festival included having a live band and over 100 people were in attendance.  The show was approximately 2 hours.  She further reported that the Gazette had put in an article and she also had a paid advertisement.

        EHSYF                                                           
Glynis McKenzie reported that EHSYF is in the middle of auditions.  Next auditions will be held at the EHCCC on May 16, 18 and 20.  Glynis reported that the cabaret was successful and EHSYF raised approximately $2500.

PHOTOGRAPHS/PAINTINGS PROJECTS FOR GOODWIN COLLEGE
No report at this time.

        VI.     OLD BUSINESS                                            
  • Ad from the Fine Arts Commission announcing Donald Boudreaux exhibit
Regina Barall reported she had sent in a picture and a copy of the letter Donald Boudreaux received from the Wadsworth to the Gazette.  She is hoping an article will be printed.

Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien is working with Mr. Boudreaux on a paid advertisement announcing his exhibit.

The Fine Arts Budget balance is $4,168.  More discussion will be held next month when more members are present.

VII.    NEW BUSINESS

VIII.   APPROVAL OF BILLS

                        To approve the bills as submitted.
                        Approved.

XI.     MEMBER’S CONCERNS                                       
Regina Barall reported that she knows a teacher interested in doing a Music and Movement program at Willowbrook School.  Regina will speak with Chair Howe.
